Olivier Messiaen - L'Alouette Lulu
Nightfall is depicted in L'Alouette Lulu (The Woodlark) through evenly paced chords in the lower register of the piano. The woodlark's incessant B-flats are supported by the B-flat major conclusions in the bass that are purely night minus the birdsong. The most dynamic character in the piece is not the woodlark, however, even though most of the music is characterized by this bird. It is the nightingale that exhibits the most energetic and abundant musical material, with varied and frenetic changes of character.

The point of departure for this work is the semitone, whether melodic or harmonic as seconds or ninths, or as pivotal points for different directions or harmonies. Bartok's modal and notably disjunct percussive use of the piano is the cause celebre.
